Deukmejian Nature Center Glendale, CA
GP-US was awarded a contract from the City of Glendale to transform a historic barn in Deukmejian Wilderness Park into a nature education center.
The barn has long been a source of pride for the City officials, but unknown to and/or underutilized by many residents. The goal is to make the barn available and accessible to visitors of all ages and abilities, transforming it into a portal which connects visitors to the park and expands their knowledge of the area’s human and natural history.
The scope of work includes siting and design for new restrooms adjacent to the barn. Additionally, GP-US is working on the siting and design for a new wilderness-themed playground. The firm is also responsible for the feasibility and design for: a hydraulic lift in the interior of the barn to accommodate disabled visitors and enable them to move from the upper to lower levels; an expanded patio on the south side of the barn for receptions, dining, and other uses with ADA access; and a snack bar concession in a structure previously used as a gardener’s shed.
